Education via Television

Television is part of most British resident’s lives with millions of households having at least one television set. Recent figures also show that Britons watch more television in comparison to ten years ago. From the favourite daily soaps like Coronation Street and Eastenders to weekly programmes, there are many different reasons for watching television.

Entertainment may be the first reason that springs to mind when you think about why you watch television but education is another important part of the equation. As it is possible to be entertained and educated at the same time, many television programmes have a dual purpose.

Children’s programmes are a good example of televisions duality and serve to keep little ones of all ages amused as well as teaching them something about themselves and the surrounding world.

Television programmes can give children something to discuss with others and helps with socialisation and learning skills. Shared viewing gives family members of all ages an opportunity to spend time together which can be difficult when different schedules have to be accounted for.

You can also use television programmes as a way to encourage children to read. You often find that children’s television programmes will have an accompanying book or magazine, especially considering many children’s authors create the written work first and then have it adapted for television programmes.

When it comes to selecting the best programmes for your children, think about how much the programme actively engages your child whether physically, intellectually or both.

Television can still be used to entertain and educate even when children have grown up. Adults have an even wider range of television programmes to choose from and whatever in the world you want to know about, there is usually a television programme to explain it.

If you have digital television then there are hundreds of channels to choose from, covering almost every genre you can think of. From news and sports to popular music and documentaries, digital television caters for every imaginable taste.

News, politics and current affairs programmes help keep you up to speed with what’s happening in the world around you. History programmes help to make sense of everything that happened in the world previously and nature and wildlife channels offer a glimpse into places you might never get the chance to see in your lifetime.

Documentaries are particularly effective at helping you to develop critical thinking about society and the world and present factual information in an appealing format. Channels such as National Geographic, the Discovery Channel and Animal Planet are all known for their high quality documentary programmes.

Digital satellite television offers the most diverse and varied selection of programmes and channels to choose from. Sky Digital is currently leading the field in Great Britain and there are plenty of Sky Subscription packages to choose from so you can be sure to include all your favourite programmes and genres.

 Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland

$59.89

Alice”s Adventures in Wonderland (1865) is a novel written by English author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll. It tells the story of a girl named Alice who falls down a rabbit hole into a fantasy world populated by peculiar and anthropomorphic creatures. The tale is filled with allusions to Dodgson”s friends. The tale plays with logic in ways that have given the story lasting popularity with adults as well as children. It is considered to be one of the most characteristic examples of the genre of literary nonsense, and its narrative course and structure have been enormously influential, mainly in the fantasy genre. The book is commonly referred to by the abbreviated title Alice in Wonderland, an alternative title popularized by the numerous stage, film and television adaptations of the story produced over the years. Some printings of this title contain both Alice”s Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There.

American Science Fiction Tv

$24.95

From The Next Generation and The X-Files to Farscape and Enterprise, science fiction television shows have millions of devoted fans. American Science Fiction TV is the first full-length study of this popular genre. Writing with the clarity of a scholar and the enthusiasm of a fan, Jan Johnson-Smith shows how science fiction television has displaced the Western in the American cultural imagination. As advances in special effects have made science fiction television technically feasible on a more lavish scale than ever before, visual style has become as important as narrative–sometimes even more important–in expressing the meaning of the genre. The main part of the book uses case studies of several key science fiction series, including Space: Above and Beyond, StarGate SG-1, and Babylon 5, to exemplify particular narrative patterns and visual styles. The case studies explore themes such as politics, ideology, race and ethnicity, gender difference, militarism, and the use of science fiction narratives as allegories of present-day social and political concerns. American Science Fiction TV opens an important new area of genre studies and will be of interest to scholars and fans alike.

Based on original archive research, this book traces the emergence of a distinctly British form of TV entertainment: the early BBC uniformed police series. Challenging the commonly held assumption that the genre began with the 1955 series Dixon of Dock Green, Susan Sydney-Smith suggests that in fact these series were shaped by television s own evolution in social function from the relaying of news to the replaying of stories.

 Beyond Sitcom

Beyond Sitcom

$35

Through the lens of structural semiotics, this book explores the textual mechanisms that have driven the evolution of televisual comedy from the classic sitcom, a genre still deeply rooted in its theatrical origins, toward a new genre that is fully integrated into a more mature stage of television”s history. It analyzes four comic series–Scrubs, The Office, The Comeback, and Ugly Betty–revealing how each program separates itself from the traditional sitcom archetype and demonstrates an increased self-awareness of the comic genre. Throughout the work, the author focuses on two cardinal themes in the transformation of the American sitcom: the relationship between comedy and euphoria; and the relationship between comic texts and reality.

Chick Lit: The New Woman's Fiction

Chick Lit: The New Woman’s Fiction

$33.95

From the bestselling Bridget Jones’s Diary that started the trend to the television sensation Sex and the City that captured it on screen, chick lit has become a major pop culture phenomenon. Banking on female audiences’ identification with single, urban characters who struggle with the same life challenges, publishers have earned millions and even created separate imprints dedicated to the genre. Not surprisingly, some highbrow critics have dismissed chick lit as trashy fiction, but fans have argued that it is as empowering as it is entertaining. This is the first volume of its kind to examine the chick lit phenomenon from a variety of angles, accounting for both its popularity and the intense reactions-positive and negative-it has provoked. The contributors explore the characteristics that cause readers to attach the moniker chick to a particular book and what, if anything, distinguishes the category of chick lit from the works of Jane Austen on one end and Harlequin romance novels on the other. They critique the genre from a range of critical perspectives, considering its conflicted relationship with feminism and postfeminism, heterosexual romance, body image, and consumerism. The fourteen original essays gathered here also explore such trends and subgenres as Sistah Lit, Mommy Lit, and Chick Lit Jr., as well as regional variations. As the first book to consider the genre seriously, Chick Lit offers real insight into a new generation of women’s fiction.

 Contemporary Spanish Culture

Contemporary Spanish Culture

$29.95

This accessible introduction to the exciting field of contemporary Spanish visual culture is the first of its kind. It combines cultural context with close readings of particular works. Going beyond the field of cinema, in which Spain is an acknowledged leader, Smith examines new developments in television, where original and innovative series drama has recently blossomed. He also explores Spanish fashion, where ‘classic’ design is married to high tech production and distribution. Two aspects of Spanish visual art are considered: the career of Miquel Barcel, global artist and pure painter, and Basque conceptual art which, through photography and installation, puts a new spin on international questions of gender and sexuality. Finally, Contemporary Spanish Culture examines Catalan independent cinema and the most recent work of Spain’s best known director, Pedro Almodvar, who has resurrected a genre long considered dead: the art movie. This innovative new book provides an ideal introduction for undergraduates and will be essential reading for those working in Hispanic studies, cultural studies, and film.

Film And Television Scores, 1950-1979

$47.49

Hollywood film scores underwent a supersonic transformation from the 1950s through the 1970s. This genre-by-genre overview of film and television soundtrack music covers a period of tremendous artistic and commercial development in the medium. Film and television composers bypassed the classical tradition favored by earlier screen composers to experiment with jazz, rock, funk and avant-garde styles. This bold approach brought a rich variety to film and television productions that often took on a life of its own through records and CDs. From Bernard Herrmann to Ennio Morricone, the composers of the Silver Age changed the way movie music was made, used, and heard. The book contains more than 100 promotional film stills and soundtrack cover art images.

 Laughing Out Loud

Laughing Out Loud

$26.03

Whoever wrote Make ‘em laugh! knew that it’s easier said than done. But people love to laugh, and good comedy will always sell. With the help of this complete and entertaining guide, writers and would-be writers for film and television can look forward to writing fresh, innovative comedy that goes far beyond stereotypic jokes and characters. In Laughing Out Loud, award-winning screenwriter and author Andrew Horton blends history, theory, and analysis of comedy with invaluable advice.Using a wide range of examples — from Chaplin’s films to Jerry Seinfeld’s hit television series, from Aristophanes’ plays to Woody Allen’s comedies — Horton describes comedy as a perspective rather than merely as a genre, and then goes on to identify the essential elements of comedy. His lively overview of comedy’s history traces the two main branches — anarchistic comedy and romantic comedy — from ancient Greece through contemporary Hollywood, by way of commedia dell’arte, vaudeville, and silent movies. Television and international cinema are included in Horton’s analysis, which leads into an up-close review of the comedy chemistry in a number of specific films and television shows. The rest of the book is a practical guide to writing feature comedy and episodic TV comedy, complete with schedules and exercises designed to unblock any writer’s comic potential. The appendixes offer tips on networking, marketing, and even producing comedies, and conclude with a foolproof Screenwriter’s Recipe for Comic Jambalaya to reinforce Horton’s contention that food and fun belong together. A list of recommended comedies and a bibliography round out this invaluable comedy writer’s sourcebook.

 Opera on Screen

Opera on Screen

$48.4

What happens to opera when it’s presented on the screen? How does an opera change when it becomes a movie, a television presentation, or a video? This book is the first to explore opera and its treatment on the screen from a musicologist’s perspective. Marcia Citron provides a fascinating history of the nearly 100-year-old genre, examines landmark works of opera on screen from a variety of viewpoints, and shows how different electronic media shape the conception of this art form. The book begins with a comprehensive survey of the origins and development of screen opera. Citron then focuses on such significant works as Franco Zeffirelli’s Otello, Francesco Rosi’s Bizet’s Carmen, Joseph Losey’s Don Giovanni, Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s Tales of Hoffmann, Hans-Jurgen Syberberg’s Parsifal, Peter Sellars’s four opera productions for television, and the celebrated relay telecast of Otello from the Royal Opera House in London. The author draws on ideas from diverse fields, including media studies and gender studies, to examine issues ranging from the relationship between sound and image to the place of the viewer in relation to the spectacle. As she raises questions about divisions between high art and popular art and about the tensions between live and reproduced art forms, Citron reveals how screen treatments reinforce opera’s vitality in a media-intensive age.
