A true American classic first published in 1943, this is the tale of a little girl living in the slums of Brooklyn, who dreamily watches out her window as a tree struggles to reach the sky. From The Publisher:The American classic about a young girl’s coming-of-age at the turn of the century.About The Author:Betty Smith was born Elisabeth Wehner on December 15, 1896, the same date as, although five years earlier than, her fictional heroine Francie Nolan. The daughter of German immigrants, she grew up poor in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, the very world she re-creates with such meticulous detail in A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. After marrying fellow Brooklynite George H.E. Smith, she moved with him to Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he was a law student at the University of Michigan. The young bride soon had two daughters, Nancy and Mary, and was forced to wait until the girls had entered grade school before endeavoring to complete her own formal education. Although she had not finished high school, the largely autodidactic Smith was permitted to take classes at the university, and she concentrated her studies there in journalism, drama, writing and literature. She capped her education by winning the Avery Hopkins Award for work in drama, and did a three-year course in playwriting at the Yale Drama School. After stints writing features for a Detroit newspaper, reading plays for the Federal Theatre Project, and acting in summer stock, Smith landed in Chapel Hill, North Carolina under the auspices of the W.P.A. She and her first husband divorced in 1938. In 1943, she married Joe Jones, a writer, journalist, and associate editor of the Chapel Hill Weekly, while he was serving as a private in the wartime army. That same year, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, her first novel, was published. The prestige of writing a best-selling, critically lauded book brought assignments from the New York Times Magazine, for which she wrote both light-hear

Choctaw are the largest tribe belonging to the branch of the Muskogean family that includes the Chickasaw, Creek (Muscogee), and Seminole. According to oral history, the tribe originated from Nanih Waya, a sacred hill near present-day Noxapater, Mississippi. Nanih Waya means productive or fruitful hill, or mountain. During one of their migrations, they carried a tree that would lean, and every day the people would travel in the direction the tree was leaning. They traveled east and south for sometime until the tree quit leaning, and the people stopped to make their home at this location, in present-day Mississippi. The people have made difficult transitions throughout their history. In 1830, the Choctaw who were removed by the United States from their southeastern U.S. homeland to Indian Territory became known as the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma.

Compiling the finest in frightening tales, this unique anthology offers a diverse selection of horror culled from the last 25 years. Hand selected from cutting-edge authors, each work blends subtle psychology and mischievousness with disturbingly visceral imagery. In the classic Chattery Teeth, Stephen King provides a tautly drawn account of a traveling salesman who unwisely picks up yet another hitchhiker, while in Peter Straub”s eerie The Juniper Tree, a man whose nostalgia for the movies of his childhood leads to his stolen innocence. Renowned fantasy author George R. R. Martin weaves a sinister yarn about a young woman encountering a neighbor who is overly enamored with her in The Pear-Shaped Man. Combining acclaimed masters of the macabre, such as Clive Barker, Poppy Z. Brite, and Thomas Ligotti, with bold new talents to the genre, including Kelly Link, Neil Gaiman, and Stephen King”s son, Joe Hill, this distinctive collection of stories will delight and terrify.

 Heartwood

Heartwood

Few writers in America today combine James Lee Burke’s lush prose, cracking story lines, and tremendous sense of history and landscape. In Cimarron Rose, longtime fans of the Dave Robicheaux series found that the struggles of Texas defense attorney Billy Bob Holland show Burke at his best in exploring classic American themes — the sometimes subtle, often violent strains between the haves and the have-nots; the collision of past and present; the inequities in the criminal justice system. Heartwood is a kind of tree that grows in layers. And as Billy Bob’s grandfather once told him, you do well in life by keeping the roots in a clear stream and not letting anyone taint the water for you. But in Holland’s dusty little hometown of Deaf Smith, in the hill country north of Austin, local kingpin Earl Deitrich has made a fortune running roughshod and tainting anyone who stands in his way. Billy Bob has problems with Deitrich and his shamelessly callous demeanor, but can’t shake the legacy of his passion for Deitrich’s heartbreak-beautiful wife, Peggy Jean. When Holland takes on the defense of Wilbur Pickett — a man accused of stealing an heirloom and three hundred thousand dollars in bonds from Deitrich’s office — he finds himself up against not Earl’s power and influence, but also a past Billy Bob can’t will away. A wonderfully realized novel, rich in Texas atmosphere and lore, and a dazzling portrait of the deadly consequences of self-delusion, Heartwood could only have been written by James Lee Burke, a writer in expert command of his craft.

From the snowy egret to a woman’s floating rib, nudism in America to Holy Communion, Simone de Beauvoir to Nathan’s hot dogs-the subjects in Lucia Perillo’s fourth collection of poetry lift off from surprising places and touch down on new ground. Hers is a vision like no other. In To My Big Nose, she muses: hard to imagine what the world would have looked like / if not seen through your pink shadow. / You who are built from random parts / like a mythical creature-a gryphon or sphinx-. Fearless, focused, ironic, irreverent, truly and deeply felt, the poems in Luck Is Luck draw upon the circumstances of being a woman, the harsh realities of nature, the comfort of familiar things, and universally recognizable anxieties about faith and grief, love and desire. In Languedoc, she writes, Long ago / I might have been attracted by your tights and pantaloons / but now they just look silly, ditto for your instrument / that looks like a gourd with strings attached / (the problem is always the strings attached). Perillo’s versions of nature are always unflinching: Most days back then I would walk by the shrike tree, / a dead hawthorn at the base of a hill. / The shrike had pinned smaller birds on the tree’s black thorns / and the sun had stripped them of their feathers. / . . . well, hard luck is luck, nonetheless. / With a chunk of sky in each eye socket. / And the pierced heart strung up like a pearl. Down-to-earth, full of playful twists of language, and woven from grand themes in an accessible, appealing way, these poems pierce the heart and delight the mind. Not one word is wasted.

Tree Hill is a small town, too small for half-brothers Lucas and Nathan Scott, who share the same father but two very different lives. Nathan is the golden boy, Lucas the abandoned illegitimate son – and in the Series Premiere, now both of them are on the same high school basketball team. One Tree Hill chronicles the heartbreak, challenges, lies and loves erupting from the relationship between Lucas (Chad Michael Murray) and Nathan (James Lafferty). Add romantic complications with three beautiful girls – plus emotional turmoil created by adults who relive (and regret) long-ago decisions – and lives are guaranteed to collide.

A community leader described Pleasant Hill on the eve of its incorporation in 1961 as a dozen subdivisions looking for unity. Pleasant Hill had previously been a loosely knit farming community on land first inhabited by the Ohlone Indians and later by Mexican rancho owners. Many heard the call following World War II to come to Pleasant Hill for a modern and western life. The hallmarks of suburbiatract houses with sprawling lawns, tree-lined boulevards intersecting neatly mapped lanes, and strip malls for one-stop shoppinggrew in abundance as young families flocked to this San Francisco Bay Area community. At the same time, pieces of its rural past stood in contrast to the new development. Walnut trees grew next door to the drive-in movie theater, abandoned railroad tracks ran beside the freeway, and sunbathers spied barnyards from their backyards. Such contrasts remain, and community groups continue to celebrate Pleasant Hills history as the citys identity continues to change.

Time was all a country boy had . a river all he needed. A summer-day swim, tending a fishing pole or floating lazily downstream in a skiff washed away a boy”s day, like rain drops on newly fallen snow. Out behind the barn and barefoot in the summertime were terms boys understood. The women”s undergarment section – found in the outhouse Sears Roebuck – a boy”s porno before vulgar was acceptable. A leg-switching from a tree branch of a boy”s own choosing, kept him toeing the mark, and mouth-washings with lye soap kept him talking proper. COUNTRY WISDOM WAS: If a boy doesn”t have enough grit in his craw to get in trouble once in a while, he probably ain”t gonna ”mount to a hill of beans. – George Warren
